When did the hospital open?

Animas Surgical Hospital opened in Durango in December 2004. Prior to that, the Animas Surgical Center served the community as a same-day surgery center. The current Durango surgical hospital is a fully licensed general hospital offering emergency services, diagnostic imaging, and inpatient and outpatient surgery.

Animas Surgical Hospital delivers better care close to home. Because we’re owned and managed by local Durango physicians, we can make improvements on the spot, without checking with a far-away corporate headquarters.

Are surgical hospitals more expensive than traditional hospitals?

No. Because surgical hospitals concentrate on specific services, they are able to provide superior care at no additional cost to patients or insurance companies. In addition, Animas Surgical Hospital has made investments in technology, equipment, systems and people that enable us to achieve remarkable efficiencies in our delivery of quality patient care.

Is the hospital a "surgicenter"?

No. Animas Surgical Hospital is licensed by the State of Colorado as a general acute care hospital. This Durango hospital offers a full range of both inpatient and outpatient surgical services along with diagnostic imaging and emergency care. A surgicenter is a same-day surgical facility and is not a general hospital.

Are patients limited to a 72-hour hospital stay?

No. There is no limitation on a patient's length of stay. You and your physician will determine the best recovery timeframe for you.

No. All of our Durango Animas Surgical Hospital's inpatient suites are private and can accommodate an overnight guest for your support.

What if I need an MRI or CT scan?

These types of services are conveniently provided in the diagnostic imaging in this Durango hospital along with ultrasound and computed radiography.

What is the patient-to-nurse ratio?

Animas Surgical Hospital staffs more nurses per patient for superior personalize care and better outcomes. One nurse takes care of only three patients—a very low ratio.

PREPARING FOR YOUR IMAGING APPOINTMENT

Please follow these are general guidelines. Your physician may give you additional instructions.

MRI

  • Please leave valuables at home.
  • Wear comfortable clothing without zippers or metal.
  • Please do not wear jewelry, (including body piercings, watches, hairpins or other metallic objects.)
  • If you have difficulties with enclosed spaces, please discuss this with your physician in advance of your scheduled exam.
  • Please ask us if you will need a driver to take you home.

CT

  • Wear comfortable clothing without zippers or metal.
  • If your physician requires you to take an exam with contrast, please check with diagnostic imaging at (970) 385-2375, option 2, for specific instructions. Some exams require laboratory blood work before they can be performed.

DEXA

  • Please check with diagnostic imaging at (970) 385-2375, option 2, for specific instructions including whether or not to take your calcium supplements and/or vitamins.

Care is not based on your ability to pay. Our Durango staff works with you to help you understand the cost associated with procedures as well as available insurance coverage and payment plans. We can estimate costs in advance so there are no surprises on the day of your surgery.

My insurance company requires notification and prior approval before I receive treatment. Does the Animas Surgical Hospital take care of this for me?

In most cases, Animas Surgical Hospital and your physician will help you figure out these requirements. It is your responsibility to contact your insurance company for details.

If my insurance company has a co-payment requirement when do I make that payment?

Co-payments are due at the time of your visit.

When am I expected to pay my bill?

If you have insurance, your deductible will be due at the time of service. You will be notified when your insurance has paid your claim. At that time, payment for any remaining balance is due within 30 days of the notification.

What if I don't have insurance?

Animas Surgical Hospital offers a variety of discounts and payment plans. Please contact billing for details at 866-915-3475.

What if I cannot pay the full amount of my bill within 30 days?

Please contact our billing department to arrange for a flexible payment plan.

Do I have any other options if I cannot afford to pay?

Animas Surgical Hospital does not refuse care to anyone who requires medically necessary services. Please contact our billing department at 866-915-3475 or (970) 385-2373 if you need financial assistance.

Will I receive different bills from the hospital and my doctor, or anyone else?

Charges from Animas Surgical Hospital are for the Durango facility bill only. Physician services (surgeons, emergency services physicians, radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, etc.) each bill separately.

Do I need pre-authorization for an emergency services visit?

No, you do not need pre-authorization to see an emergency services doctor.

How does emergency services bill?

Animas Surgical Hospital is a fully licensed emergency care facility and emergency charges apply to all services. You will receive separate hospital and emergency service physician bills. You may also receive bills from a radiologist or pathologist, if those services are needed. Patient care is our top priority. We understand the high costs associated with an emergency visit and provide excellent care in a cost-effective manner.

What if I don't have insurance?

What if I need to file secondary insurance and Medicare supplemental claims?

As a courtesy to our patients, Animas Surgical Hospital will file all insurance claims on your behalf. Please keep in mind that it is your responsibility to make sure we have complete and accurate insurance information. If your insurance company denies the claim, full payment for services is ultimately your responsibility.

VISITORS AND FAMILIES

At Animas Surgical Hospital, visitors can relax in the comfort of a spacious waiting area and enjoy complimentary refreshments or take a scenic walk on the Durango Animas River Trail.

Visiting Hours

Patients are encouraged to have family and support persons with them during the many phases of their surgical experience. Regular visiting hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. However, arrangements for after-hours visitors are easily accommodated. Animas Surgical Hospital welcomes an overnight guest to stay with the patient.

Children

Children, accompanied by an adult, are allowed to visit.

Visitor Health

We ask that our visitors be aware of their own medical conditions when visiting our Durango hospital. Visitors who have a fever, symptoms of colds, flu or any type of communicable disease should not visit the hospital until they are well.

No Smoking, Please

Animas Surgical Hospital is a smoke-free facility and strictly adheres to the Colorado Clean Air Act. As a healthcare institution, we recognize the hazards of smoking and enforce a no-smoking policy throughout our facility. We do not permit smoking inside or near any hospital entrances. For your health and the health of others, smoking is only permitted outside of this Durango hospital in designated smoking areas.

Rivergate Pharmacy, located in the adjacent Rivergate Medical Campus, offers breakfast burritos, sandwiches, salads and other items for purchase.
